Jessup, a native of Pennsylvania, emigrated to Kentucky circa 1800 and settled in Mason County. After a brief stint as a store clerk in Maysville, Jessup entered the army as a second lieutenant in 1808. Ten years later, he had risen to the rank of brigadier general and service as Quartermaster General. He continued with that rank and position until his death in 1860.
